Cannabis Consumption Guidelines

A Guide to Responsible Cannabis Consumption

We want to ensure you have the best experience every time you consume.

According to the United Nations, cannabis is the most commonly consumed plant worldwide.

It has been used for personal enjoyment and medical support for thousands of years—and as legalization spreads, a growing body of research supports the potential of cannabis for wellness and recreation.

At Aurum Botanics, we care deeply about ensuring our customers are educated about consuming cannabis safely, responsibly, and effectively. We hope this guide supports your cannabis journey.

Shop Cannabis Smart

One of the best ways to consume responsibly is to shop smart—sticking to licensed, authorized retailers like Aurum Botanics.

All the products we stock have been thoroughly tested for safety and efficacy. We know their ingredients and understand their effects, so you’ll always know what you’re getting.

When buying new cannabis products, take time to read the labels, so you understand the percentages of THC and other cannabinoids (like CBD) each product contains. This knowledge will help you consume responsibly and avoid overdoing your dose.

When You Shouldn’t Consume Cannabis

There’s a time and a place for everything, including cannabis. Although many occasions are ideally suited to cannabis consumption, there are some cases when it should be avoided. Don’t consume cannabis if you are:

  • Pregnant, breastfeeding, or caring for children
  • Working with heavy machinery or physically dangerous equipment
  • Will have to drive or operate a vehicle within 12 hours

How Much Cannabis Should I Consume?

With all cannabis products, we have the same recommendation: start low and go slow. But what exactly does that mean? Let’s look closer at the most common types of cannabis products you’re likely to spot on our shelves.

Smokable or Vapable Cannabis

Whether vaping concentrate or smoking flower, inhaling delivers THC straight to your brain via the oxygen-rich blood in your lungs. This means you’ll feel the effects of smoking immediately, and they’ll linger for 2-3 hours.

This immediate onset means it’s easy to get your ideal inhalable cannabis dose. Start with a small hit, then wait at least 15 minutes before taking another. If even one hit is too much, ask your budtender to recommend a high CBD, low THC inhalable product for a more subtle experience.

Eating Cannabis

When you swallow THC, it passes through your digestive system before being absorbed into the bloodstream. This means it can take up to two hours for the effects to kick in, at which point they can linger as long as 12 hours.

Ingested cannabis is absorbed more completely, meaning the same dose you’d smoke might be too strong if eaten. Experts recommend starting with an extremely low dose of 2.5-5 mg, increasing your dosage slightly each session until you find your perfect balance. Wait at least three hours before upping your dose to account for the delay in effects.

Applying Cannabis Topicals

Because cannabis topicals are applied directly to the skin, there is little risk of them causing a psychoactive effect. Apply as needed, and don’t hesitate to reply as often as necessary.

I Took Too Much—Now What?

Even with caution, it’s possible to over-consume cannabis. Here’s what to do if you’re experiencing that unpleasant “too high” feeling:

Know that this feeling is temporary. It might be unpleasant, but you’re perfectly safe, and this sensation will pass.
Drink plenty of water. Hydrating may ease your physical symptoms and keep the dreaded dry mouth at bay.
Try meditation. Lying down and taking long, slow breaths through your nose will help calm and center you. You may even fall asleep.
Practice self-care. Listening to calming music, watching a favorite show, or even asking a loved one to babysit you can transform an unpleasant experience into a delightful trip.
